App delegate view controller and connect the output port

I declare an output file in ... AppDelegate.h in MainStoryBoard which has a view controller. How will this output port and the view controller connect? The book is written by holding down the Control and ViewController AppDelegate icon onto the icon, but when I hold down the Control icon and then select the AppDelegate when a pop-up menu bar. .
